Wheaten is a coat color that ranges from pale beige and light cream to warm gold, closely resembling the shade of ripened wheat in a field, from which the term gets its name. In dogs, a wheaten coat often appears soft, warm, and slightly varied in tone, with some individuals showing lighter or darker shading depending on age, grooming, and natural coat texture. Puppies of wheaten-colored breeds may also be born with a darker coat that gradually lightens as they mature, eventually developing the characteristic golden-beige appearance.
The Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier and the Glen of Imaal Terrier are two well-known dog breeds that may have a wheaten coat color. In the Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier, the color is especially associated with the breed and is typically paired with a silky, gently waving coat. The Glen of Imaal Terrier can also display wheaten coloring, though its coat is usually harsher and more rugged in texture. This warm, natural shade contributes to the distinctive appearance of both breeds and is often considered a recognizable feature of both.
